Rain & Lucky Newsletter: Term 2, 2024

Welcome to Term 2! Classes resume Monday April 15th, with no classes on ANZAC Day (Thursday April 25th). We can’t wait to see everyone back in the studio!

2024 Term dates

Term 1: February 5th – March 28th
Term 2: April 15th – June 29th
Term 3: July 15th – September 21st
Term 4: October 7th – December 14th

Classes do not run on public holidays. If your regular class falls on a public holiday, you are welcome to arrange a make-up class. These must be booked within the same term and do not roll over.

New Classes – Free Trials!

We have TWO brand new classes starting in Term 2 and would like kids to try them for out for free on Saturday 20th April:

      • Starlets Drama (7-9 yrs), 1:00-2:00pm at Fairfield with the amazing Mr Dean

      • Moonbeams Jazz & Hip Hop (5-7 yrs), 11:45am-12:30pm Preston with the loveable Miss Rose.

Get in touch if you’d like to register for a free trial of either – limited spots available!

    Security Update – Cameras Installed

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, security cameras have been installed in both Fairfield and Preston – in the studios, foyers and at the front doors. There will of course not be any cameras installed in private areas such as bathrooms or changerooms. The purpose of this measure is the security and safety of our students and staff, as well as our premises. Footage will not be published or used for any other purpose. There are also signs up around the buildings notifying that cameras are in operation. If you have any questions please get in touch.

    Room for Rent

A rare opportunity to rent our Preston Music Room has become available, and we’d love to keep this ‘in the family’ by having someone from the Rain & Lucky Community take it on. This light-filled, spacious room has many potential uses, from music/singing, to pilates/yoga, manual therapies/private practice, art or an office space. Let us know your ideas and feel free to spread the word, but get in quick if you’re interested!

      * Most Senior classes take part in either Presentation Day or the Mid-Year Showcase – not both. Read on for a full list of who is doing what.

Presentation Day & Parents Watching Week – May 13th-June 1st

Information about these events was sent out in Term 1, but if you need it re-sent, just let us know.

You will have received videos and Practice Charts for Presentation Day – please continue to encourage some home practice. On Presentation Day, a guest teacher will come and watch classes perform their set exercises. It won’t be Miss Rain this year, as she is on maternity leave, although she does hope to try and Zoom in to watch some of the classes, if possible!

The following week is Parents’ Watching Week, where you are all invited to come and watch classes, and see students receive their medal and certificate** for completing their Presentation. This is intended as a fun, stress-free event, celebrating all of our students’ participation and progress. For a full list of the classes taking part in Presentation Day, please click here.

** Stardust classes don’t receive a medal and certificate, but we will make this class extra fun and special for them!

My Magical Mum Day – Sunday May 5th

Celebrating all incredible mothers in our community, My Magical Mum Day is back! Students*** are invited to bring mum (or any mother figure) to join in a special dance class with them at our Preston studio. This is a charity fundraiser and suggestions for this year’s charity are welcome! Stay tuned for info on how to register.

***Although students of all ages are absolutely welcome, this event is usually attended mostly by our younger students.

Senior School Mid-Year Showcase – Friday June 21st

Upper School classes that don’t take part in Presentation Day have been rehearsing for the Mid-Year Showcase (formerly the Cabaret). This year it will be held at the fabulous Darebin Arts Centre!

For a full list of the classes taking part, please click here. Tickets will be available to purchase soon, but in the meantime here is a reminder of the info you need for the Showcase:

      • Students come straight to the theatre after school (bring dinner, and dance costume)

      • Theatre Rehearsal at 4:30pm

      • Performance at 8:00pm (approx 60 mins)

More information was sent in Term 1 – if you need this re-sent, just let us know.

End of Term Disco – Saturday June 29th

To celebrate the end of Term 2, we’re running another Disco, for 5-12 year old Rain & Lucky students, at our Fairfield studios! Save the date…

      Brand New Simple Bun Tutorial

A reminder that a ballet bun is part of the girls’ uniform requirement for ALL ballet classes for school-aged students. Miss Rose has kindly made this tutorial video for you! We’re always happy to help show you how to do a bun as well.

      Uniform in Colder Months

As we move into the cooler months, correct uniform is still required in all classes. This includes warm-up items. We have jackets, trackies, legwarmers, tees and onesies that are all official warm-up uniform – other items are not permitted in class. Please remember also not to wear dance shoes on the street! This helps us protect our floors, and ensures your dance shoes last longer.

      DanceStep Fundraiser

One of our Trainee teachers, Miss Jorja won a DanceStep Award last year, and is now raising funds to attend the DanceStep Leadership Summit in Canberra! Keep an eye out for the hair accessories she will be selling soon at the studio. This fundraising project is organised by Miss Jorja herself – please support this dedicated young leader and entrepreneur and help her reach her goal by purchasing a hair accessory! More details to come.

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Assessments

Invitations have been sent out to students eligible to sit an RAD Assessment this year. We highly recommend this positive and beneficial experience. Here’s some more information.

Improvisation Dance Lab with Miss Martina

Miss Martina is one of our new teachers in 2024 – directly from Italy and with an amazing career as a professional dancer and choreographer. We are now taking expressions of interest for her new class: Improv Lab!

These classes explore IMPROVISATION as a means to discover deep levels of embodiment, connection and presence. Through attention to the body and breath, we explore our sensations and feelings and allow them to inspire the dance. This safe space is provided for beginners and experience movers. Gentle bodywork techniques are used to release hidden tension patterns and blocks, allowing a rich expansion of movement vocabulary.

Martina created this lab inspired by yoga techniques and extensive experience of various dance styles. Send us an email if you’re interested to know more!

      Door Codes & Student Safety

While there are staff in the building, Rain & Lucky students and parents are able to access the studios with the codes:

Preston: 3077 (the last 4 digits of the Preston phone number, printed on the door)

Fairfield: 6724 (the last 4 digits of the Fairfield phone number)

We request that parents come to the studio door to collect children, rather than having them meet you on the street – especially as we head into darker nights – so that we can be assured of their safety.

      Pilates

Mat Pilates classes with Sarah from Rituél Fitness run at our Fairfield studios most mornings. Rituél has now added some free Community Classes as well. You can contact Sarah directly on 0418 183 860 or email info@rituel.com.au to find out more.
