DanceStep: Student Teacher Education Program

Rain & Lucky is a proud registered affiliate studio and member of the DanceStep program.

DanceStep empowers students to take care of others and guides them to be leaders and role models. The program covers assistant teaching skills such as behaviour management, different learning needs and styles, safe dance principles and anatomy, to name just a few.

This is an opportunity for our dancers to flourish not only as young people, but to grow into competent and confident assistant teachers and student leaders.

What is DanceStep?

DanceStep is a student teacher education program used by many studios across Australia to introduce keen students to the requirements and skills involved in teaching dance. Participants are guided through 6 levels, gaining experience and independence in their teaching abilities.

Who can join?

Rain & Lucky students aged 12 and above are eligible to apply.

How does it work?

Student teachers are given access to theory workbooks via an online portal. They complete these alongside practical teaching hours, assisting Rain & Lucky teachers.

Each student teacher will be matched with a Junior class to assist for the year, helping the class teacher and guiding the younger students. This may also involve assisting with a routine in our end of year concert.

Tasks may involve

  • Lining students up before class
  • Helping with shoes and uniform
  • Demonstrating movement during class
  • Helping students stay focused during lessons

Students will need to complete 30 hours of class assistance per level. They must print out their workbook and bring it to every class they assist with, and get their hours signed off by a teacher. On completion of each level, they can download a certificate.

What sort of commitment is required?

Student teachers are expected to attend all of the classes that they are assigned to throughout the year.

They must also complete the workbook for each level of the program; one level per year. This workbook supports them in their in-class participation with various activities and tasks that will strengthen their knowledge and skills.

Student teachers  will also attend three mandatory mentoring workshops throughout the year to check in on their workbook progress and meet with their other DanceStep peers.

The dates for the 2026 Mentoring Workshops are:
15th February,
31st May,
25th October
10:30am-1:30pm Add them to your calendar now!

In Levels 5 and 6, students also complete a Studio Project which will encourage them to give back to the community in some way.

Student teachers are role models to our younger students. We expect them to be well presented (correct uniform and tidy hair), and embody the Rain & Lucky Values at all time: Love, Excellence, Imagination, Joy, Respect, Belonging.

Please note

While some DanceStep graduates have gone on to joining the Rain & Lucky teaching team, this is not a given for every participant. We love to mentor and encourage student teachers, and but we don’t always have openings for trainee teachers to join our team.
