What Age Should My Child Start Dance Classes?

If you have ever typed “what age should my child start dance” into Google late at night, you are not alone. It is one of the questions we get asked the most at Rain & Lucky Academy of Dance, whether we are chatting to a mum at Preston pick up or a dad dropping in to our Fairfield studio.

The honest answer is that there is no single perfect age. But there is a good way to think about it.

The early years (18 months to 5 years)

Little ones this age love to move, wiggle and copy what they see. Classes at this stage are all about fun, music, imagination and following simple instructions like stop, go, spin and freeze. It is less about technique and more about building confidence and a love of moving their body.

The primary years (5 to 8)

This is when a lot of kids start proper structured classes, like ballet, jazz or hip hop. By now most children can sit still for a few minutes, take turns, listen to a teacher who is not mum or dad, and remember a short sequence of steps. If your child is at school and can follow a simple routine at home, they are usually ready for this stage.

Older kids (9 to 12)

Please do not think your child has missed the boat if they have not started dance by now. We see kids join us at 9, 10 or even 11 all the time, and they do brilliantly. Older beginners often pick things up quickly because they already have the focus and coordination that comes with being a bit older. What matters most at this age is finding a class that matches their actual skill level, not just their age, so they feel challenged but not overwhelmed.

Signs your child might be ready

A few things we look for when a new student walks in the door include being able to separate from mum or dad for the length of a class, showing interest in music or movement, being able to follow two step instructions, and simply wanting to give it a go. Talent is not on this list. Curiosity is far more important than natural ability, especially in the beginning.

It is less about age, more about the right fit

What we care about more than the exact birthday on the form is whether your child will feel welcome, safe and excited to come back next week. That comes down to the teacher, the class size and the culture of the studio, not a strict age cut off.

At Rain & Lucky, our classes across Fairfield and Preston are grouped so kids are learning alongside others at a similar stage, in a friendly, encouraging environment where mistakes are just part of learning. We know our families by name, and we love watching kids grow in confidence, not just in their dancing.

Why families choose Rain & Lucky Academy of Dance

We are more than just a place to learn steps. Across our Fairfield and Preston studios, we have built a warm, close knit community where kids feel safe to try new things, make friends and grow at their own pace, term after term. Our teachers are experienced and patient, and they genuinely care about every dancer in the room, not just the ones who pick it up the fastest.

Whether your child wants to dance for fun, fitness, friendships or has bigger dreams in mind, we meet them where they are and help them build real skills and confidence along the way. For a lot of our families, Rain & Lucky feels less like an activity on the calendar and more like part of the neighbourhood.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enrol my child?

Enrolling is easy. Head to our enrolment page at rainandlucky.com, choose a class that suits your child’s age, and get in touch on 0483 948 744 if you have any questions along the way.

What should my child wear to their first class?

Comfortable clothes they can move freely in are perfect for a first class. If you decide to continue on, we can talk you through any uniform or shoe requirements for their specific class.

What dance styles do you teach at Rain & Lucky?

We offer a range of styles across both studios, including ballet, jazz, hip hop and more, so there is usually something to suit your child’s interests and age group.

How long are the classes and how often do they run?

Class length and frequency depend on your child’s age and level. Younger kids usually start with one shorter class a week, and older or more experienced dancers may attend more often.

My child is nervous about starting, is that normal?

Completely normal, and very common. Our teachers are used to helping shy or nervous kids settle in, and most children relax within the first class or two once they see it is a friendly, low pressure environment.
